EXTINCTION by Gabe McKinley
Guild Hall, April 1-16th 2017 Design Associate: Dionisio Cortes |
Setting:
Two adjoining hotel rooms in a casino in Atlantic City. Synopsis: Extinction is a dark comedy about two college friends whose annual outing of male-bonding and debauchery veers precipitously off course when unmet expectations spiral into a volatile showdown. A darkly funny drama exploring the evolution of friendships - and the lengths to which we go to save them from falling into extinction. Set Design Concept: A wall-less timber structure frames out the thresholds that divide spaces. A gilded frame hangs on either side of the wall above each rooms' respective bed headboard - to further define the wall space, and signify a mirror. It lays on the tenuous threshold upon which the two main characters' relationship hangs. Max and Finn. The actors are to use the space and it's reveals as they would a hotel room, and each seat in the audience holds a different perspective. The line is blurred between where the hotel rooms end and the audience begins. The audience is meant to become a voyeur in the space as if they were all past occupants. |
"The artistic decision to place the seats on the stage itself, in an intimate theatre-in-the round setting, was a stroke of pure genius... feeling like voyeurs witnessing a long night of debauchery and harsh revelations." - East Hampton Patch "Their tale unfolds on an extremely inventive set by Raye Levine, who also plays Victoria. Her expansive yet intimate recreation of two rooms at the hotel is filled with all sorts of nooks and crannies, where the audience sits on the stage practically immersed in the action like flies on imaginary walls." -Theatre Life |
